Stratified charge technology in the two stroke engine reduces fuel consumption by 20% while keeping emissions up to 70% lower than conventional chainsaws. In addition to this, four overflow channels swirl the oil-air mix allowing for optimum combustion and highly efficient performance. The result is lower consumption and high torque across a broad range of rpm. A cyclone system works to decrease the frequency of filter cleanings by a method of pre-seperation that removes 80% of dust particles before they reach the foam filter, reducing wear and prolonging healthy operation. Intense vibrations can have a long term effect on the blood vessels. To combat this Stihl have integrated anti-vibration dampers in the engine compartment to minimise oscillations from the engine. This, in turn, keeps vibration through the handles at a safe level for safer and more comfortable operation. The Stihl MS171 chainsaws are fitted with a compensator which regulates the fuel flowing into the carburettor. When the air filter starts to become clogged the amount of fuel injected is reduced to keep the fuel-air ratio constant, keeping power consistent until a cleaning is necessary. Ematic chain lubrication works in conjunction with oilomatic chains to pinpoint exactly where lubrication is required. This cuts oil consumption by 50% compared to conventional methods while maintaining excellent lubrication and lengthening wear. A side chain tensioner is reachable through the sprocket cover and allows the tension to be easily changed without the need to touch the sharp chain. A single lever master control houses all of the engine functions so the users hand never needs to leave the handle and the special filler caps are lockable and unlockable without the use of tools.
