The Stihl MS181 chainsaws are light saws that are ideal for general property maintenance as well as cutting firewood and felling small trees up to 30 cm in diameter. Vibration levels are kept in check by anti-vibration dampers in the engine compartment which catch oscillations from the engine, significantly lessening vibrations through the handles to protect the user's health and make work more comfortable. The two stroke engine features stratified charge technology to keep fuel consumption and energy emissions low while four overflow channels heighten torque over a wide range of rpm. The Stihl MS181 chainsaws feature a cyclonic air cleaning system that seperates out 80% of dust particles before air filters through the foam filter, increasing the intervals between filter cleanings. The compensator acts as a controller, regulating the flow of fuel in order to keep engine power constant. When the air filter starts to clog the compensator reduces the amount of fuel flowing into the carburettor to keep a healthy fuel to air ratio in the combustion chamber. Ematic chain lubrication system works best when used in conjunction with the oilomatic chains. This system identifies where lubrication is needed, reducing oil consumption by 50% without compromising full lubrication and longer wear. Housed under the sprocket cover is a side chain tensioner which can be used to assemble or adjust the bar and chain without the operator needing to touch the sharp chain. A single lever master control keeps all of the important functions of the Stihl MS181 chainsaws in one place, allowing continuous operation without removing hands from the handle. The fuel and oil tanks are fitted with special catches which can be locked and opened without any tools.
