Powerful & reliable performance
With the advantage of Honda’s GCVX170 Autochoke engine in this machine, you can rely on high performance operation. This is an easy-starting engine, which, in combination with the 51 cm / 20 inch cutting width, allows you to work on medium to large sized lawns without a problem.
Enjoy excellent cutting results
Supplied with the machine is a mulching plug, which simply clips onto the back of the machine and provides a fantastic finish without the need to collect the cuttings. Saving you up to 30 percent in time compared to collecting, mulching involves blowing the cut grass back down into the turf so it is often completely unnoticeable and also provides a natural fertilisation process.
If you do opt to collect, the included 60 litre collector means you won’t be stopping to empty it as often.
Superbly easy to work with
As a self-propelled machine, the SP53 Elite is instantly easy and comfortable to work with – you simply pull the drive lever and go on your way. You can change the cutting height similarly easily between 27 and 90 mm in five positions with a single lever, an anti-scalp plate ensures a great finish even on the lowest cutting heights and the high rear wheels make manoeuvring the machine over uneven terrain simple.
With its metallic silver, steel cutter deck, this is a great-looking mower that won’t let you down.

Due to the wet weather, I’ve only been able to use the machine once on long, wet grass: my review is based purely on that and the buying expreience.
I bought the Honda powered mower to replace an old manual Mountfield mower: the idea being that my joints needed some help in lugging a mower over tufty grass! To that end, it works great. The large, rear driven wheel managed to propel the machine through the long grass effortlessly. I’m making the assumption that it will continue to do so.
Buying from Garden Machinery Direct was a simple and efficient process. The Mower arrived within two days of purchase, delivered by Fed-Ex.

Bought this as a replacement for the similar Atco model on which the Briggs& Stratton Engine gave up after 6 years, to get the Honda Engine.
No Engine manual included ,had to go on the internet to find out how much oil to put in on assembly and start up. Have used it now for approx 5 Hours and changed oil as manual. Had problem with drive belt coming off after cutting longish dry grass. Found that the flimsy plastic drive belt guard under the mower had cracked open allowing the cut grass material to clogg up the drive belt and remove it. Not sure if this is covered under Guarrentee.
The cutting height adjuster is better than the Atco model. It is also missing the front lifting handle which is on the Atco model, which was useful when transporting it. Generally, it cuts well. speed ok , larger wheels help on sloping garden. Hope the engine lasts longer than the last one.

I would avoid buying this lawn mower as it creates aggravation rather than satisfaction when using it. There are only two things wrong with the design and build but they are critical.
The grass box is two piece and the bottom is attached with plastic flimsy clips. The grass box collapses when only 1/4 full – This means it will take you twice as long cutting the lawn as other mowers of the same power.
The pull cord is temperamental and gets stuck often and needs careful operation to start the engine.
This is my first mountfield and I would not purchase again as these are silly design faults that cause huge frustration and may run through their product range.

I bought this to replace a 12 year old Mcculloch self propelled mower with Briggs Stratton engine that finally died.
I love the Honda engine on my new mower. Just turn the fuel tap on and pull. No pumping the primer etc.engine is smooth a quiet it seems more efficient but I haven’t actually calculated this yet. To be fair my old mower was 12 years old so I’m not comparing like with like.
Decking etc is not so good. The self propelled lever has already popped out of its lug on the handle. Easy to put back but shouldn’t really happen in the first place. I suspect this will be a constant issue. My old Mcculloch had nice padded self propelled and drive leavers which made it comfortable when mowing my large grassed areas. I find my hands ache now after about 45 mins so I’ll put some diy padding on.
Having said that the same motor on a fully Honda mower is quite a bit more expensive. So you pays your money and takes your choice.

Haven’t given a rating on performance as I haven’t had the chance to use it yet – one thing I have noticed though is the speed of the drive – it’s a tad on the fast side for a 70 yr old and there isn’t any way to regulate this

Easy start – collect or mulch – good cut – used just twice for large lawn area – easy to use
A slightly heavy machine but power drive operates smoothly – good pace – wide cut – disengage drive for smaller fiddly areas – happy todate.
